Too many comics bloggers approach the whole idea of "writing about comics" from a literary standpoint to the point that it can be nauseating.

Granted, I guess it shouldn't be expected of comics bloggers in general to be able to write and draw comics criticism like Scott McCloud or Neil Cohn, but having something to say about the narrative imagery (or just a panel) from an art criticism standpoint would be refreshing.

Kudos to you, Jim. I used to get my comics at the Styx in R.H. before it closed down or got bought out or whatever. (Is there a writer who isn't?)

Re: your reviews of Godland #1 over at CSBG - right on! Happily, it seems like this book is actually getting quite a lot of good press. And regarding your critique of the dialogue in JLA: Classified #10 in the same post - I think you're right, despite my enthusiasm for its "realism" in my own review. My wife and I don't banter exactly this way either (I''ll spare everyone the embarrassing details) but I liked the stylization nonetheless, especially Perry's barking editor routine. (It reminded me of those fast-talking newspaper films from the 1940s or 50s, but my knowledge of film history is so shoddy that I couldn't give you an example.) Great reviews - you've piqued my curiosity about Silent Dragon and Western Tales of Terror (I also love Mandrake--his Spectre was inspired)!

Finally, re: being a hybrid-format Morrison reader: I will be too, only I'll be the stupid kind who buys 80%-90% of the actual issues and then repurchases everything in trade format because I haven't grown past my childish fetishization of "real" books. Sometimes I really wonder about my judgement.Jim Roeghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16381244745309535742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13604760.post-1122921040689279232005-08-01T14:30:00.000-04:002005-08-01T14:30:00.000-04:00I'm buying them in the floppy format, but not read...I'm buying them in the floppy format, but not reading them. There's just too much going on, so I will read them all at once. I'm a hybrid!

If you don't like being linked, stop writing such excellent, thought-provoking stuff! I liked Godland too, and brought up some of the stuff you did, but in nowhere near as good detail and insightfulness. I also have faith in Casey.Greghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13481137891542684401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13604760.post-1122911013914042782005-08-01T11:43:00.000-04:002005-08-01T11:43:00.000-04:00Argh!! The rant was my first step towards working my way out of this dilemma, and your comments are making it hard to go back. By this time next week, I'll likely have acquired most of the damn books... You can get just about everything through Midtown Comics for just under cover price.
