The first arc was the best, but as you say, we'll never know. So often, series don't really hit their stride until issue 20 or so. Wouldn't it be nice if Marvel and DC committed themselves to two full years of every new ongoing series they launched? Imagine some of the things that might have been, if only they'd had a chance to develop past their growing pains.

tom - is there another Thing left? That's good news! And as for Close Encounters, it was out the day I went on my big renting spree, but I picked it up this afternoon along with a couple of others and will watch this weekend.

Thanks, zack! I may indeed give flikr a try - as soon as I get over my fear of new technology. Of course, he may have had bigger plans in mind, but we'll never know...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13604760.post-1149740674141810912006-06-08T00:24:00.000-04:002006-06-08T00:24:00.000-04:00I think you've nailed Donnie Darko!I also couldn't...I think you've nailed Donnie Darko!

I also couldn't resist the director's commentary on the DVD - of the original release, which I wrote about, long before the DC came out.

The Director's Cut makes much more explicit the silly ideas that Kelley completely failed to get across in the original theatrical release (though perhaps only explicit to people who have been long musing over the original). The original is a much more indie mystical experience; the Director's Cut is much more overbearing B-grade SF. I'm not sure what I would have made of the DC if I had seen it first, but coming after the original, it's pretty painful.David Goldinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12988083380983768496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13604760.post-1149697390927540712006-06-07T12:23:00.000-04:002006-06-07T12:23:00.000-04:00Thanks, shane. By the way, thanks for all the crazy link-action courtesy of “Meanwhile…” at TGC’s new home at blog@newsarama. How cool is that?!?

david - this is so typical of me. Not only do I come late for the party…I come to the wrong party! Sigh.

Mrs. Roeg and I really enjoyed the director’s cut of Donnie Darko, even though it left us mystified. After it ended we turned to each other and said: whaa??? We’d figured out Mulholland Dr. fairly handily, so we weren’t going to be defeated by the space-time paradoxes of Donnie Darko. Were we?

Last night we watched Richard Kelly’s writer/director’s commentary with Kevin Smith (?) in search of enlightenment.

Um. Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh. Hmm…

Not sure we’re much the wiser. There’s a point in the discussion when Kevin Smith says to Kelly: either you’re really bad at communicating your ideas or I’m really dense. This might not be an either/or situation. I too felt dense throughout the film AND director’s cut, and my impression was that Kelly was not being coy when he insisted that he wasn’t trying to confound us but had a fairly clear story in mind.

Still not quite sure what that was, but I loved the film’s evocation of the 1980s and its (I thought) psychological non sequiturs. After hearing Kelly talk about his script, I realize how completely I did’t get the film the first time around, and to be honest, I think I prefer utter mystification to the “comic book” logic of the "explanations" of the tangent universe sci-fi plot. (I asked for it, of course, but as I was listening to the director’s commentary I kept thinking, no, NO Richard…shut up!!)

Donnie Darko may well be one of those movies in which the writer/director has so many ideas and pursues them through such powerful archetypes and detailed intertwining symbols (which I loved) that the end result is actually kind of overdetermined and garbled and the “intended meaning” dissipates into something that is actually much more interesting. At the very least, the director’s cut of the film is such a witch’s brew of potent imagery and angst that the opportunities for viewer projection are more extensive than the filmmaker likely “intended.” No wonder it’s been such a hit in the age of internet chatter (like this!). (I think that Smith says something to that effect in the commentary track, and I agree.)

I’m very curious to watch the theatrical version.Jim Roeghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16381244745309535742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13604760.post-1149649406610357422006-06-06T23:03:00.000-04:002006-06-06T23:03:00.000-04:00INXS song?
